Chapter 15

They collected the hire car from the offices between the hotel and the airport. The smallest vehicle they found was still huge, and it was weird to be driving on the wrong side of the road. However, Lucy had watched a video on YouTube about how to drive in North America and now sat confidently behind the wheel. Jaz agreed to drive back to the hotel after the barbecue, so Lucy could have a drink. Their first stop was Bob’s house, to tell him the excellent news.

Lucy tapped Bob’s postcode into the SatNav, and after having a trial drive around the car park, she edged towards the main road. Once Lucy had turned the correct way, and she was on a straight road, she relaxed, becoming more comfortable.

Nervous about Lucy’s driving, Jaz distracted herself by tapping the car’s touchscreen buttons to find a decent radio station. Her foot frequently pressing itself into the floor as she tried to slow the vehicle.

Fortunately, they arrived in one piece and Bob met them on the driveway, hugging Lucy and putting his arm around Jaz’s shoulder. ‘Well, how did it go?’

Lucy looked at him. ‘You knew about this?’

Bob shrugged. ‘Well, this one needed a confidence boost. Let’s see the ring.’

Lucy presented her left hand, the stone glistening in the spring sunshine.

‘Wow, that’s a fine diamond, you special lady.’ He leaned forward and kissed Lucy’s cheek. ‘Congratulations to you both.’ Bob led them through the house into the conservatory where, in expectation, he had arranged a bottle of Champagne and three glasses on the table. ‘Cheers,’ he said, presenting them each with a glass and raising his in the air. ‘Me and Adam look forward to the wedding day,’ he said with a sad undertone.

Jaz hugged Bob before sitting. ‘That’s a splendid garden,’ she said, pointing out the wild birds pecking at the fat balls Bob had hung on the trees.

‘I enjoy working in the garden, it’s so peaceful,’ said Bob.

‘You should get Jaz to lay you a path while she’s here, she’s such an expert,’ added Lucy.

‘Ignore her, she’s still put out by my heavy workload,’ said Jaz, squeezing Lucy’s knee.

Bob laughed. ‘What are you two doing today?’

‘We’re going over to Heidi and Jodi’s for their thirty-year anniversary barbecue,’ said Jaz.

‘Oh, interesting,’ said Bob, glancing at Lucy.

Lucy ignored his questioning face, continuing to smile at Jaz. ‘Yeah, we’ve got pleasant weather for it.’ She leaned to Bob and patted his hand. ‘When are you going to the hospice?’

‘One o’clock,’ he sighed. ‘We’ve time for nibbles before we set off, I bought us donuts.’

Lucy drove towards Jodi’s farm, Jaz’s hand resting on her thigh, raising Lucy’s heart rate.

When they arrived, Lucy found a parking space in the field at the end of Jodi’s drive and, holding Jaz’s hand, walked up the pathway.

Jaz took in the plot’s acreage. ‘This is massive, much bigger than our family farm,’ she said, overwhelmed.

‘The horses live over there.’ Lucy pointed up the hill.

‘It’s great that you enjoyed your horse-ride.’ said Jaz.
